Update: We will be having our trial practices on Jan 18, 23, and 25 in Central Gym. Iaido is 6:00~7:30pm, Kendo is 7:30~9:30pm. Feel free to drop in and give Iaido or Kendo a try! Please arrive 15 min before class starts, and wear comfortable clothing (ie. shorts/sweatpants)

7th Annual Intercollegiate Taikai – January 14, 2012 @ SFU

The 7th annual western intercollegiate tournament is set for January 14, 2012 at SFU, Central Gym. Participants include Simon Fraser University (SFU), University of British Columbia (UBC), University of Victoria (UVic), and University of Washington (UW).

Deadline for registration is Jan 9! Please check the [SFU] Intercollegiate Taikai page for more information, or register in practice.

Annual Steveston Kendo Taikai – Feb 11, 2012 @ McMath High School

The 50th annual Steveston Kendo Taikai will be held on Saturday, Feb 11^th , 2012 beginning at 9:30AM at McMath High School, 4251 Garry Street, Richmond, B.C.

Deadline for entries will be Sunday, January 22nd, 2012.

We will be taking registration as a club until Jan 18th, 2012. If you are interested in participating, please let us know in practice or through [SFU] Steveston Taikai.

Practice Location Change

Winter 2011 Grading

Congratulations to everyone on the kendo grading! We had quite a huge group going for grading this winter, and we ended with seven new ikkyu, three new shodan, and one new nidan!

Special thanks to our seniors who came out to show support and guide us through the grading process!

A reminder that practice is canceled for this coming Wednesday (Dec. 07), and our last practice for the semester is next Wednesday (Dec. 14).

Team Canada Women’s Team Wagashi Fundraising

As part of the on-going fundraising efforts towards the World Championships next year, the Team Canada Womens Team will be selling Japanese “wagashi” or cakes over the next few weeks. All orders must be submitted to tozenjikendoclub@shaw.ca by October 31st, 2011. Orders will be ready for pick up on November 13th, 2011.

All right guys, for those who do not know, in Kendo we have a World Championship every three years. The last one was back in 2009 in São Paulo, Brazil. Next year will be the 15th World Championship, taking place in Novara, Italy. And yes, we have an amazing Women’s Team that will be going and representing Canada! If you would like to show your support for the girls, this fundraiser is the perfect chance!

“Wagashi” (和菓子) is a traditional Japanese confectionery which is often served with tea. Two types of wagashi:

Dorayaki: а red bean pancake which consists of two small pancake-like patties made from castella wrapped around a filling of sweet red bean paste.

Daifuku Mochi: a small round mochi (glutinous rice cake) stuffed with sweet filling, most commonly anko, sweetened red bean paste made from azuki beans.

These wagashi can be great gifts for others, or simply for yourself to munch on while studying for midterms and finals!

2011 Fall Icebreaker

We are having our Kendo and Iaido icebreaker this coming Monday (Oct. 3)! This is your chance to come out, enjoy some food, and get to know each other outside of practice~

Last week was our trial week for the fall semester and we had a pretty good turnout! It was great to see both new and old faces :) Our fall program officially starts next week, so please remember to register! And yes, you may register for the program even if you didn’t come for the trial week~

We will be having our trial week for the Fall Semester 2011 this week!

Mon (Sept 19) @ Central Gym: Iaido 6:00pm~7:30pm, Kendo 7:30pm~9:30pm
Wed (Sept 21) @ Central Gym: Iaido 6:00pm~7:30pm, Kendo 7:30pm~9:30pm

You may choose to attend only Iaido or only Kendo, or to attend both! Our trial is free and open to the general public. This is your chance to find out what is Iaido and Kendo, and try it out for yourself! Please come with proper gym attire (shorts and t-shirt).

17th Canadian National Kendo Championship – July 2, 2011 @ BCIT, Burnaby BC

Celebrating 100 years of Kendo in Canada.

On July 2^nd 2011, the 17^th Canadian National Kendo Championships will be held in Vancouver. An estimated 150 participants from across Canada will visit Vancouver to join in a celebration of culture, tradition and competition at the British Columbia Institute of Technology, in Burnaby, BC.

With its large and active Japanese Canadian community, Canada has been at the forefront of international Kendo for over the past 35 years, with our teams placing among the top three in seven out of thirteen World Championships. Since the inception of the women’s division, Canada has placed third in the 3 Championships to date.

At this year’s tournament we are celebrating one hundred years of kendo in Canada. Steveston and the Canadian West Coast was the starting point of kendo in Canada, which dates back to the beginning of the 20^th century, and we cannot think of a better place and occasion to commemorate this historical milestone.
